Urban design can be described as “the language of the city.” Urbanized (2011) is a documentary film that explores exactly who gives form to this language and how it is articulated in today’s modern world. Through an examination of global communities, it asks viewers to ponder the future of our cities.
For this assignment, students will write a 450–600 word (1 1/2 – 2 pages) essay response to Urbanized. First, briefly summarize the film (one paragraph only). Then, critically address the ideas brought up by the film using one of the comparisons below to focus your ideas. Responses may be based in personal opinion, but should address the specific question associated with prompt you select (make sure to state which cities you will be addressing at the beginning of your essay). Your response must be typed – no hand-written work will be accepted – Times New Roman, 12-pt font, double- spaced. Completed assignments are due at the beginning of class Thursday, October 8th. Papers submitted electronically to Blackboard should be labeled as: LastName_First_E2.doc (or .docx formats only).
YOU MAY SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING PROMPTS:
1.) Brasilia and New York City: What specific architectural and urban planning concerns are discussed for each city by the film? In your opinion, can aesthetic design co-exist harmoniously with the public? Why or why not? Which tends to take priority? Should it? How does aesthetics of urban design impact the lived experience of those who live in these cities? What ideas, theories, or writers does the film cite to investigate these ideas? Has the film impacted your view of Tampa? If yes, in what way?
2.) Bogotá and Copenhagen: What specific architectural and urban planning concerns are discussed for each city by the film? How have specific projects in each city worked towards addressing transportation and mobility issues in dense urban centers? Are either/both “democratic” (and what does this mean)? Why? In your opinion, are these projects effective? Why or why not? Would a similar project(s) work in a city that you have lived in? Explain in detail. Has the film impacted your view of Tampa? If yes, in what way?
3.) Detroit and Beijing: What specific architectural and urban planning concerns are discussed for each city by the film? In your opinion, which poses the bigger challenge: the expansion of accelerated growth or scaling back urban spaces? Why? How is each city dealing with their respective challenges, and to what degree is the community involved? Are their plans effective? Explain. Has the film impacted your view of Tampa? If yes, in what way?
4.) Rio and Cape Town: What specific architectural and urban planning concerns are discussed for each city by the film? How are architects using low tech/high tech solutions to improve upon basic infrastructure and the daily lives of city dwellers? Be specific, including how these technologies (low or high) are impacting communities. Which do you find most interesting in application and why? Has the film impacted your view of Tampa? If yes, in what way?
5.) New Orleans and Stuttgart: What specific architectural and urban planning concerns are discussed for each city by the film? In each city, local communities are significantly impacted by drastic changes. How has civic engagement impacted the future of these cities? How have those communities responded to the plans/solutions promoted by urban planners, architects or artists? Be specific. In your opinion, are these same plans/solutions effective? Explain. Has the film impacted your view of Tampa? If yes, in what way?
