Theologians and scholars of religion study religion in a wide variety of ways. Over the course of the semester you will be emulate such endeavors by writing 1 research paper for each of the five religious traditions we cover in class. These papers include the following: 1) textual analysis; 2) a particular religious belief; 3) historical personage; 4) an historical period; and 5) a visit to a place of worship.
Over the course of the semester you must do one of each of the five types of essays. When you do which one depends on you. For example, you may decide to write the textual analysis paper for your Islam paper, go to a Hindu temple for your visit assignment, and a study of a historical personage for your Judaism paper. It is totally up to you; you just need to write one of each. If you do not write one, 5 points will be deducted from your final grade.
When selecting a topic on which to write, be mindful that scholars can and probably have written voluminously on your topic over time. These papers are a minimum of 2.5 pages; as such, you don’t want to pick a topic that is too broad or general. As such, you need to be specific and narrow in your topic selection.
Here are a couple tips:
1) Ask yourself, “Can I narrow my topic down?”
2) After you pick your topic, you might consider consulting widipedia, not for a source, but to help narrow down your topic. Wikipedia often breaks subjects up into “smaller topics” with subheadings.
3) Ask me for help.

General Instructions for Each Type
Religious Ritual/Worship/Celebration: Every religious tradition worships in its own unique way and contains numerous rituals and celebrations. For this category of paper, you will need to write on either an aspect of the tradition’s ritual/worship or you may choose to write on a particular celebration. Remember to keep your topic narrow. For example, you might decide to focus on the Eucharist in the Catholic Mass, or the fasting benefits of Ramadan.
Religious Belief: Of course, coming to understand various religious beliefs is a central component of our course. As such, one of your papers asks you to research 1 particular religious belief. When selecting which religious belief to research and being mindful of keeping your topic narrow, remember religious beliefs change over time and may vary across culture. In other words, don’t write a paper on the Trinity. That is too broad and understandings of the Trinity change over time. To narrow down, for example, you might want to focus on what Tertullian, the man who introduced the concept of “Trinity” into Christianity, had to say about it.
Historical Personage: A great many number of highly influential men and women are associated with each of the religious traditions we cover in class. For one of your papers, you will need to write on one of these individuals. Now remember, people write books on these men and women; as such and in keeping with the endeavor to maintain a narrow topic, you should not write entire biographies. After learning a little bit about the individual who decide to research, pick a particular significant event or period in his/her life. For example, you may decide to write on Paul within the Christian tradition. A good topic would be his conversion experience or a particular controversial issue he fought over. Another good topic to explore for any individual would be his/her particular influence and/or contribution to the religious tradition s/he is associated with.
Historical Period: Religions change over time and history, as you well know, changes as well. Scholars often divide history into different periods. For example, in Western history there are the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Dark Ages, etc. And of course, there is a lot you could possibly write about within any given historical period. Thus for this piece, you might consider researching how significant changes during the particular time period you are writing about effected the religion. Or you might discuss how the religion responded to changes in history. Perhaps you want to explore the ways in which a religious tradition responded to a particular event. For example, you might want to look at what Christians said about the Black Plague, or Muslim responses to the Crusades.
Religious Center Attendance: Once over the course of the semester you must attend a place of worship for one of the traditions we cover in class. This must be from a religious tradition in which you were not raised or have never attended a service before. In other words, if you are Muslim, you cannot write about your experience at a mosque. If you are Catholic, a Catholic Mass will not count. If you are Catholic and have attended, say, a Baptist service in the past, that won’t count either. When writing this paper address the following:
1) Your expectations prior to attending. How were you feeling, what were your thoughts prior to the experience?
2) Your experience itself. What did you see, what did you do? Just describe the experience itself.
3) How did your experience match up with your expectations? For example, maybe you were nervous that you were going to stick out like a sore thumb, people were going to ignore you, etc, but when you got there, the people were friendly, welcoming, etc.

Nuts and Bolts
–2.5 pages minimum; 4 pages maximum (if your paper does not meet the minimum page length requirements, points will be deducted)
