Imagine this scenario: The parent of a curious 3-year-old expresses frustration that her child “wants to explore everything” and asks if her child does the same at preschool. Explain to the parent the role of exploration in a developmentally appropriate science curriculum and what her child gains from exploring. Then give the parent at least one idea for managing and guiding the child’s explorations at home. Cite the Learning Resources in your answer.
Imagine that you are mentoring a new preschool teacher in your early childhood program. During a water-table activity related to objects that sink or float, you notice that the teacher limits the activity by labeling each object and then describing what happens as the children place the objects in the water. Later, the teacher asks for guidance related to how he could improve. Explain how to use language to engage children’s thinking and discussion in a science inquiry, providing examples related to a sink-or-float activity.
Using the worm-study examples in Chapter 5 of your Teaching Across the Content Areas course text, explain in your own words the value of documentation in an inquiry project. Then describe two additional ideas for communicating results in the worm project and explain your reasoning.
