By Chicano music, I mean music making by Chicanx Americans. You might consider popular bands such as La Santa Cecilia, Ozomatli, Quetzal, and Chicano Batman. What direction do you believe the music is heading into?

Example 1 – The Chicano movement influenced the music production in the Chicano communities because the movement evolved as a response and rebellion of the youth Mexican-Americans to the discrimination, oppression and abuse infringed to them by the dominant class. The music gives voice to people and Chicanos can express through their music all their feelings and frustrations for not being accounted in this country as part of it. Looking for imagens that include them in the Anglo society, these minority groups created their own style of dress and music as a way to express their cultural identity. The exclusion from the Anglo culture and the consciousness of being rejected by them inspire the Chicanos to create their own style of existent.

The evolution of the Mexican-American’s music is coming along with the circumstances of the Chicano community. As the youth started using a particular way to dress “the pachuco suits”, they also started making music that show their identities and beliefs to other ethnic groups. The music evolution depending on the changes in society that affects Chicanos. They used the music to make them noticed, to show others that Mexican-Americans are important as human beings. They are showing the importance and contributions of the Chicano people into the Anglo society. Chicano music has impacted the United States’ society since they started playing and composing it.

The Chicano music will continue flourishing despite the opposition, the rejection and the negation from other ethnic groups. Mexican-Americans is a community in frankly expansion. Consequently, their music is growing as well. Singers like Ritchie Valens and Selena Quintanilla are good examples of Chicano and Tejano music and the great influence they had and still are having in our communities after their dead is visible. Chicano bands and groups of musicians like; La Santa Cecilia will continue playing Mexican’s songs and promoting the Mexican culture in this country. The music created by groups and bands of Chicano musicians “are designed to preserve the resources of the past by adapting them to the needs of the present”. (Lipsitz 160)

Example 2 – The Chicano movement in the 1960s influenced Chicano music making in communities by embracing the culture and hardships of the Chicanos and manifesting this into music. There were lots of protest over the war taking Chicanos out of their community to go fight in the front lines of the war and families in these communities were highly affected. everyone began noticing the casualties and families being broken apart. Therefore, people began to gather and protest and took on this revolutionary role for the Chicano communities. Musicians used this to their advantage to give them an extra edge and let people know that their art was supporting the cause. Although, some Chicano musicians felt as if they were just trying to be an American versus revolutionaries. They just wanted to be known as an American band and soon found that this would a very difficult task to overcome. This was a challenge they faced and in the making of music these musicians were in the middle of political identity. The influence begins to make the musicians change their style of music and wanted to make this statement for the Chicano movement and the music and art served as a backbone for the movement. I think the future of Chicano music is very inherent and will continue to flourish because it’s part of a community and people make this type of music happen. As long as it expands multiculturalism then it will continue to expand overall, so I don’t see Chicano music dying out. Our country is so mixed of different people and this music is a voice of Mexican American people and this a voice that will not be hushed. There were many of Chicano artist who came out successful playing this type of music which will open doors for other musicians who continue to play Chicano Rock n Roll. The Chicano Rock N Roll is here to stay.

Example 3 – The Chicano music movement in the 1960s influenced the music being produced in communities because the music defined the reality Chicanos were facing. This music was intended to discuss social issues existing such as cultural awareness, Vietnam war, education of minorities, land reclamation, and farm workers rights.

The time period during the 1930s to 1940s for Chicanos was getting sent back to their homeland through repatriation and then being sent back to the U.S. through the Bracero program. Chicanos were occupying the low working class jobs, unfairness rose and so did discrimination against them. Although WW2 brought opportunities for Mexicans, most were being forcibly drafted into the Vietnam war. Entertainment was no where to be found in East LA for Chicanos, every time they thought they were doing something right critics began. Young Mexicans started wearing zoot-suits in the 1940s that opened way to the Pachuco music to self-express the hatred and brutality thrown at them by Anglo Americans. Chicano music evolved the way it did because they wanted to keep up with society, Pachuco boogie flourished through Lalo Guerrero and Richie because Jazz at that time was popular. Chicanos knew that through music they can express themselves and show the world that Chicanos can make a hit just like Americans. With the Latinization of East LA, punk music emerged to express police brutality facing Mexicans. The music being produced by Chicanos was a reflection of society.

I believe the direction Chicano music is heading to is all up to the direction we as a society are heading towards. Music is created through reality, it’s an act of self-expression if problems exist they will be mentioned in the lyrics and they will become hits because everyone can relate. New music will arise, the old music will become popular again just how Los Lobos did with their hit La Bamba or their will be some blending to make new music out of the music that already exists. Chicano music is long lasting and it will never die because it is part of America, it is our culture and most of all it is part of our history because it defines who we are today.

Example 4 – The 1960’s Chicano Movement influenced the making of music in Chicano communities by emphasizing the issues that Chicanos faced in their everyday life. This type of music allows Chicanos to embrace themselves and express their beliefs and feelings for others to understand even a glimpse of the kind of social issues they go through. Due to the cultural identity crisis that many Chicanos face, their inclusion in society was a barrier that they overcame by using music. They created their own style of music in order to show the people that they are here to stay. By combining American music into their Spanish style, they created Chicano music by blending different genres. The exclusion from the Anglo culture allowed them to utilize juxtaposition in their music. This is emphasized in many artists work including Los Lobos who incorporated many different styles to his music. In doing so, they showed their identity and expressed their beliefs and values as Chicanos/as.

I think the Chicano culture will continue to challenge the Anglo culture as it always has. Their communities were shaped by traumatic experiences that led them to keep true to their roots and the reason why they fought so hard to be heard. The idea of juxtaposition and bifocality will continue to be present in that these multiple realities will be seen in their music and livelihood. This type of music seems to always evolve and continue to change so long as the community seeks out change. For the Chicano culture, resistance, discrimination, and oppression have always seemed to be linked to them. However, by expressing their identities through music, musicians like Selena, Chicano Batman and more will continue to explain their history and stories through music. The direction this style of music is heading in all depends on the Chicano culture and their ability to change and evolve as music progresses.

Example 5 – The Chicano movement influenced music making in Chicano communities by integrating issues affecting all minorities in their music. Chicanos faced unique problems about cultural identity and assimilation. Many failed to become assimilated to the American culture and thus felt excluded from vital economic and political resources. Chicanos sought for political and social identity during the Chicano’s movement, which gave voice to Mexican Americans. It infiltrated creativity under all the discrimination they experienced. Chicanos were aware they were not going anywhere and thus it seemed as if they were “never quite existing, but never quite vanishing”. This thought helped shape the rise of Chicano rock. Their exclusion from political power and cultural recognition enabled them to create a sophisticated capacity for ambiguity, juxtaposition, and irony found in their music. The Chicano community created music about the similarities experienced by different cultures. They blended eclectic styles of blues, soul music, and funk. For example Los Lobos, embraced all types of music. They included cumbias, rock n roll, and corridos into their music. They felt they could incorporate different rhythms to their music because they recognized their similarities.
Despite drawing upon different genres, Chicano musicians never lose sight of the unique historical realities that shaped their communities. Their effort to enter mainstream culture by connecting with other cultures reflects their struggle to challenge the Anglo cultural domination. They used bifocality and juxtaposition of multiple realities to challenge that notion. Chicano artists will continue to embrace America’s multi-cultures. As one of the Quetzal female members states, their music filters and blends different music and it is constantly evolving like their identities. There will continue to be resistance and assimilation between Chicanos and this will be seen through their music. Another member of the Ozomatli group explained how their music is part of history. As history continues to progress, different genres of music will be mixed within the Chicano music.
