We can work on Ways to Present a Theory

There are multiple ways to present a theory:

Set of hypotheses –

Researchers pose questions that are both objective and descriptive;

Relate the central question to the strategy of inquiry
Begin with “what” or “how”
Focus on a single phenomenon or concept
Use exploratory verbs like discover or describe
Avoid directional words such as “affect” or “impact”
Make sure the final statement has the ability to evolve during the study
Be open-ended without reference to the literature
Specify the participants and research site (unless stated previously)
It is important to highlight that according to Creswell (2009), you first start with constructs, then form hypotheses that explain relationships.

Another way to explain a theory is how Variable X affects Variable Y. Consider the example of a simple association between two variables, Y and X.

  1. Y and X are associated (or, there is an association between Y and X).
  2. Y is related to X (or, Y is dependent on X).
  3. As X increases, Y decreases (or, increases in values of X appear to effect reduction in values of Y).

For example, the more bees available will increase the pollination rate of flowers. Another example is the number of cars on the highway will affect traffic congestion.

Hypotheses are formed using the If, Then methods. If X occurs, then Y will be the result. For example, if you continue to blow air into the balloon, it will burst.

It is possible to have multiple variables affecting the final outcome. For example, Yellow and Blue, when mixed together, will create the color Green.

Writing a persuasive essay is like being a lawyer arguing a case before a jury. The writer takes a stand on an issue—either “for” or “against”—and builds the strongest possible argument to win over the reader.

In a persuasive essay, it’s the writer’s job to convince the reader to accept a particular point of view or take a specific action
