Instructions:
Mental health/behavioral disorder or issue: Ocd in adolescents and children
Pick a mental health/behavioral disorder or issue that typically presents in childhood or adolescence. Below, you will find a detailed description of the various areas you will need to complete in your paper. In order to adequately address each of the sections, your final paper should be approximately 6 to 8 pages, not including the APA title or reference page. Also, please keep in mind the proper use of grammar and spelling ,as this will also contribute to your grade. This is an academic writing so it should be written in third person voice; in other words, no use of âIâ in the paper. It should be double-spaced in a 10 or 12-point font such as Times New Roman.
You will need to conduct research within the academic literature to create this paper. Please make sure that you are using articles from peer reviewed journals. It is NOT appropriate to use websites as resources for this paper.
Below you will find the details of what should be included in each section of your paper:
- Introduction (10 points)
a. Provide a brief introduction by identifying your disorder/issue. This can be done by defining the disorder/issue.
b. Introduce the prevalence of the problem. Cite statistics to tell your reader how often we see this disorder in children/adolescents. After reading the introduction I should know why this is an important disorder to focus on. - Detailed description of the Disorder (40 points)
a. Consult the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM 5) and provide a description of your chosen mental health/behavioral disorder as well as the diagnostic criteria used to make this diagnosis.
b. If this is a disorder that also occurs in adults then consider how the disorder presents differently in children/adolescents. Are there differences in the diagnostic criteria based on age, if so what are they?
- Theories to explain the disorder (50 points)
a. You are to a major psychological theory that provides an explanation for how your chosen disorder develops. You should explain the basic premise of the theory and then provide the detailed description of how the theory explains the development of your disorder.
b. You are to identify and explain the biological or biopsychological basis for this disorder. More specifically, what is the brain basis of the disorder? What do we know about the parts of the brain that are involved or impacted by this disorder? What biological factors contribute to or put someone at risk for this disorder?
- Treatment (50 points)
a. If you were being asked to work with a child or adolescent with this disorder what are some of the interventions (behavioral or psychological) you would use to help the person with this disorder? Keep in mind the level of training you have to this point in your career. I would not expect anyone to say they would do psychotherapy because you have not been trained to do that yet. Your Walls and Rauner textbook will likely be helpful in creating this section of your paper.
- Multicultural Issues (30 points)
a. How does this disorder present or how is it treated differently based on multicultural issues? What does the research literature say about how multicultural issues (for example, gender, race, military status, age etc.) affect the course or treatment of the disorder? Please identify at least one research studies that has looked at a multicultural issues in relation to your disorder.
- Summary (20 points)
a. Provide a through conclusion/summary to your paper. You could possibly include information about the future of research or what is still needed to be understood about this disorder as a way to conclude and summarize your work.
- APA Style (25 points)
a. Has provided proper title page, internal citations, abstract, and reference page. Has followed all APA guidelines for a research paper. - Grammar/Structure (25 points)
a. Has used proper spelling and grammar throughout the paper. Has written the article in third person voice. Has followed proper guidelines for academic writing (does not use contractions etc).
