Explain the fundamental values of American democracy. Contrast liberalsâ and conservativesâ view on government
Consider the current divide over cultural, social, and economic issues in American political experience. Please identify some of these conflicts and in some cases the movements addressing them (Example: racism and Black Lives Matter; or internet culture wars and the alt-right and so on).
The fundamental values of American democracy include individual liberty, equality, and justice. These values are enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
Individual liberty is the belief that each person has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This means that individuals should be free to make their own choices and to live their lives as they see fit, as long as they do not harm others.
Equality is the belief that all people are created equal and should be treated equally under the law. This means that no one should be discriminated against on the basis of race, religion, gender, or any other arbitrary characteristic.
Justice is the belief that everyone should be treated fairly and that the law should be applied equally to everyone. This means that everyone should have access to justice, regardless of their social status or economic resources.
