I believe many individuals express their who they are as a person in many different ways. Some ways may include body piercings or tattoos. I know many individuals that have tattoos and piercing that have a meaning behind them. I believe it’s acceptable in society and individuals should not be judged for having them. I am currently working in a hospital. Many of the professionals that I work with have tattoos and are able to display them without consequences. Our hospital policy allows healthcare staff to have piercings and tattoos visible as long as they are not offensive to others. Facial piercings are acceptable as long as a clear piece of jewelry is placed appropriately. I was able to discuss the dress code policies of my current facility with some of my managers that have been with the company for many years. They informed me that the policy has changed over the years. As discussed in the All About Image article, social norms begin to change as society changes (Przybys ,2009). As a result of this change, companies begin to adjust. The change has revised the dress code allowing visible tattoos and piercings. This change was in effect to prevent discrimination and allow employees to express who they are comfortably within the work environment. It’s very important to understand that people express themselves differently and should never be judged based on their appearance. A place of employment should always allow employees to remain professional and comfortable as long as they are in policy guidelines.
