Major Clinical Project and Presentation

1. Select a client at your field practicum site suffering from a disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
2. Using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as your assessment tool, briefly describe symptomology and criteria that must be met for diagnosis.
3. Identify your theoretical approach or practice perspective when assessing an individual for this disorder; specifically, empowerment theory, strengths approach, the life model, systems theory, afrocentric/africentric.
4. Provide an overview of the disorder to include the age of onset, the percentage of individuals that may suffer from the disorder, the rate of this disorder in men and women and other key factors.
5. Select and describe one evidenced-based, therapeutic model that can be used to treat the disorder.
6. Describe how the intervention is evaluated to determine its effectiveness.
7. You must include at least three techniques from the model that is used when conducting therapy. For example, if you choose behavioral therapy then include and explain three behavioral therapy techniques such as (1) flooding, (2) systematic desensitization, and (3) implosion.
8. Identify any cultural factors, interpersonal dynamics or contextual factors that may influence the therapeutic relationship; strengthen and/or threaten therapeutic alliance.
9. Explain the theory of psychopathology that corresponds with the therapeutic model.
10. Describe the efficacy of the model based on current research.
11. Select and describe one psychotropic medication that may be used in addition to therapy to treat the disorder. List the potential side effects of the medication.
12. Describe a treatment(s), if any, that may serve as an alternative to talk-therapy. For example, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is an alternative approach for reducing symptoms of Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder and treating Major Depressive Disorder. Other alternative treatments may include Electroconvulsive therapy, Neurosurgical treatments, Vagal Nerve Stimulation and Deep Brain Stimulation.
13. Identify any ethical concerns that may emerge with various treatments for this disorder.
14. Determine if oppression, discrimination or historical trauma may contribute to the onset of the disorder. For example, in the DSM-5 there are “Pretraumatic Factors” that may put one at risk of suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. “Minority racial status” is one of those factors.
15. What public policies influence research and treatment of the disorder? If there is an absence of policy/policies, develop a brief policy framework to help address research and treatment. For example, “the federal Combating Autism Act enacted in 2006 provided funding for autism spectrum disorder and developmental disabilities research, screening, treatment and education. The Act established a federal advisory committee, the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee to develop a plan for the conduct of, and support for, autism spectrum research” (National Conference of State Legislators/ncsl.org).
