In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the author makes many good points and suggestions that are designed to help someone organize their habits and approaches to daily life that are intended to improve multiple areas of life (Covey, 1989). The argument can be made that the points and suggestions given are consistent with a Christian world view. A specific point that Covey makes is that “Between stimulus and response, man has the freedom to choose” (Covey, 1989, p.77). Even though people cannot always control situations that occur outside of the personal being, the freedom to respond in a particular way to those situations exists and is completely up to the person. There are several bible passages that call for Christians to respond in specific ways to outside events or people. In Proverbs there is a great deal said about having wisdom in response to others in the world. It says to “not let kindness and truth leave you…so you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and man” (Proverbs 3:3-4, NASB). It does not say that it is okay to put a pause on kindness and truth depending on the situation. This would indicate that Christians are expected to respond a certain way no matter what the circumstances are. Jesus instructs his disciples by saying, “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, NASB). It is explained that Christians are going to have problems and face trials, but they are to approach the world with courage, and feel peace in the comfort of knowing that God is in control. Just as Covey and the bible explain, people have the freedom to approach the world and all situations with the response of their choice. For a Christian, this idea of controlling responses to situations in a biblical way, can only lead to strengthened courage and peace. When the choice is made to respond positively in all situations, growth and improvement are the most likely results.
