I’m trying to study for my Psychology course and I need some help to understand this question.

DISCUSSION 1:

After you have reviewed the lecture notes, I want you to think about the first couple of slides. The answers to each of the statements presented are FALSE. These are common “misconceptions and negative stigmas” about mental health.

Were there any statements that surprised you to know that it was a stigma/misconception? Why? Do you have any of your own negative stigmas/misconceptions about mental illness? Don’t be shy. Share what they are! Openly discussing these stigmas helps us gain better understanding and perspective.

Kids of Helicopter Parents are Sputtering Out

1) This article suggests that kids with over-involved parents and rigidly structured childhoods suffer psychological blow back in college. The term “helicopter parenting” is very popular in today’s discussion of childhood/adolescent development. Which parenting style(s) identified in our textbook (refer back to Chapter 8!) can relate to the concepts presented in the article? Why?

2) What did the article find in terms of coping skills and emotional resiliency with adolescents raised with a “helicopter” parenting style?

3) What are some explanations for the correlation of college student’s mental health and “helicopter parenting”?

4) Why is the research that is presented correlational and not causal? What other variables can impact college student’s mental health?
