My current field is clinical psychology and I plan to focus specifically on mental health and substance use disorders. With this field I tend to think that qualitative research is used most often and is more widely accepted. With substance use and mental illness, there are many different opinions that people have and more often than not, those opinions are negative. Like most people, I have family and close friends who struggle with addiction and mental illness, so I have always seen a different side to these individuals. I see them as my friend, my uncle, etc. and not just another “drug addict”. Because of this, working with these individuals can become difficult because it sometimes is hard to separate the actual science of the illness and the personal attachment you have with the individual. I have learned that addiction and mental illness is a disease and as hard as it may be, you can’t take it personally when that individual relapses or doesn’t show up for therapy or fails to meet these “standards” that you have created.
