Governmental economic regulation ** affects all our lives, and helps structure the condition of our society and the distribution of resources. It is also claimed as a major issue in divisions between left and right politically, often a reason why people vote for one candidate or party or another.

Pick at least 2 periods of regulation or deregulation (including one before and one after 1980.)  Compare, contrast and analyze the periods, addressing such things as the issues, forces, actors, goals, tactics, arguments etc. influencing the implementation, dismantling and manipulation of regulations or deregulations in each historical period. You can discuss the role of ideology and or propaganda and slogans (or ads) and their effects, usefulness or irrelevance.

Consider discussion of relevant roles of the courts, the legislature, agencies and their regulations, enforcement, and the enforcers, as well as various political parties, money, businesses and business groups, citizens’ movements/groups,

Importantly, what were the effects of the regulation or deregulation? What were the intended effects? Were there unintended consequences afterwards?

Have a thesis, introduced in the first paragraph that summarizes your findings.

*Exception: You may use non-class sources to cover relevant issues since 2008 (with full documentation.)
