Abstract

Facing a terminal diagnosis is a profound situation that is outside the experience of most people.The impact of hearing this news for the first time can be overwhelming and result in an avalanche of unexpected challenges for patients and their families.  In order to reduce the risk of further harm, it is of vital importance that physicians are trained to communicate effectively and with compassion. Built upon successful components of other communication skills programs, the study “Efficacy of Communication Skills Training for Giving Bad News and Discussing Transitions to Palliative Care” by (Back, 2007) is based upon designed a 4 day residential training workshop that teaches communication skills to physicians who are delivering bad news.This article was selected from a final selection of three similar articles that were found from the JAMA network which is an online platform for journals belonging to the medical and health fields. This particular article was chosen as it fulfilled all the requirements of the present study and had an emotional appeal for the researcher as it deals with a very important yet often overlooked aspect of health. The purpose of this paper is to critique this empirical study of teaching communication skills to physicians who are delivering bad news.
