❖ Three Research-Reflection-Synthesis Briefs (20% each for a total of 60% of course grade) – These brief (3-4 page) topical reports will require you to synthesize current research in the field of cross-cultural psychology, your own observations and reflections, along with the textbook and lecture material.

“Development, Cognition, and Emotion”

Please answer the following questions and prompts in a 3-4 page narrative that demonstrates a personal understanding of the material. Provide detailed examples from your own experiences that illustrate the concepts; if possible, discuss how this information might be relevant to your future career; whenever possible, define concepts with your own words. Please answer EACH of the six questions

❖ Explain the “carpentered world theory”, in your own words. Who (as in which culture or group of cultures) is MORE fooled by the Mueller-Lyer illusion? Provide a REAL- LIFE example that applies this set of ideas… be creative.

❖ What is the major difference between Americans and Japanese in terms of recognition of objects in a visual field? Provide a REAL-LIFE example that applies/uses/recognizes/illustrates this difference.

❖ What does the text mean by, “emotion involves more than feelings”? Provide ANY THREE components of the general emotion model and EXPLAIN what they mean in your own words (use personal examples to illustrate).

❖ Researchers have observed DIFFERENCES in color perception/cognition across cultures. Using the color wheel (or spectrum of all colors) as a guide, please EXPLAIN (in your own words) where in the color spectrum we expect to see such DIFFERENCES emerge. [info in audio lectures and also in supplemental readings]

❖ Describe the “Whorfian hypothesis”, in your own words and GIVE an example that demonstrates your understanding of this concept.

❖ What is a concluding, summary statement that we can say about the concept of attachment for all human cultures? Is it universal? Which aspects? Reflect on this topic in a paragraph or so.
