We can work on An Analysis of the Response and Management Process in the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Crisis

The crisis analysis report intends to test your knowledge and understanding of crisis management
principles and concepts that you have obtained throughout the course.
Choose one (1) man-made OR one (1) natural crisis/disaster.
a. Prepare an individual written report in which you critically review and analyse the response and
management process by several actors of this particular crisis /disaster. You want to assess to
what degree the situation was handled effectively or not.
b. Selecting 2-3 specific actors, recommend what aspects in the organisation’s crisis management
plan should be modified, and how, for potential future crises.
The report must have the following components and structure:

  1. Scenario description [~300 words]
    ▪ Select a crisis/disaster that provides substance for in-depth research and discussion based on
    the Crisis Management Cycle;
    ▪ Apply a recognised definition of ‘crisis’ or ‘disaster’ to underline the relevance of your case to
    the course (e.g. based on course literature);
    ▪ Provide relevant background information with the main facts and context of the case;
    ▪ Make use of maps, tables, figures, models etc. where appropriate (can be placed in Appendix).
  2. Actors involved [~800 words]
    ▪ Analyse the surrounding factors and the most relevant actors/stakeholders involved that played
    a significant role (select 2-3 main actors);
    ▪ Categorise different domains and sectors (governmental, public, private), and investigate to
    what extent actors collaborated.
    ▪ Differentiate between the actors in regards to their decision-making and the impact thereof,
    positive and/or negative, on the development of the critical situation
  3. Review & analysis based on the Crisis Management Cycle [~900 words]
    ▪ Critically review the incident in regards to the effectiveness of the overall response;
    ▪ Check events as they occurred against the crisis management cycle;
    ▪ Use the crisis management plan steps as critical indicators.
  4. Conclusion [~400 words]
    ▪ Judge whether the crisis management of this particular case was a success or failure;
    ▪ Highlight points of significance, leading up to the ‘Recommendations’ section.
  5. Recommendations [~600 words]
    ▪ Focus mainly on the actor that is responsible for the crisis management;
    ▪ Retrospectively, develop realistic recommendations based on your opinion backed up by your
    sources (NB: take into consideration the time, place and circumstances of the incident).
  6. Bibliography, references & appendices
    ▪ Ensure accurate application of APA referencing, encompassing in-text citations throughout the
    report and a comprehensive bibliography that includes page numbers and paragraphs
    referenced;
    ▪ Incorporate a minimum of 10 scholarly sources, excluding platforms such as Wikipedia,
    dictionaries, vocabularies, media, encyclopedias, blogs, photo galleries, etc., to support the
    analysis of your chosen topic. Appropriate resources encompass academic books, journal
    articles, reports, policy papers, and similar scholarly materials;
    ▪ Include additional details, statistics, examples, and large visuals in appendices

Title: An Analysis of the Response and Management Process in the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Crisis

Thesis Statement

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill crisis exemplifies a man-made disaster that warrants an in-depth analysis of the response and management process by key actors. By critically reviewing this incident through the Crisis Management Cycle, we can evaluate the effectiveness of the overall response, identify areas for improvement, and recommend modifications to organizational crisis management plans for potential future crises.

1. Scenario Description

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill, also known as the BP oil spill, occurred on April 20, 2010, when an offshore drilling rig exploded, causing a massive release of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. This crisis fits within the Crisis Management Cycle as it involved preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation efforts. The spill had severe environmental and economic consequences, making it a pertinent case study for crisis management analysis.

2. Actors Involved

The main actors/stakeholders in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill crisis included BP (British Petroleum), Transocean (the drilling contractor), and government agencies like the U.S. Coast Guard and the Environmental Protection Agency. These actors operated in different domains (private, public), and their collaboration varied throughout the crisis. Decision-making by these actors had both positive (e.g., containment efforts) and negative (e.g., delayed response) impacts on the situation.

3. Review & Analysis based on the Crisis Management Cycle

The response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill was marred by challenges such as inadequate contingency planning, delayed recognition of the severity of the spill, and a lack of coordination among key actors. By assessing the crisis management cycle steps (preparedness, response, recovery, mitigation), we can identify systemic failures that hindered an effective response to the disaster.

4. Conclusion

The crisis management of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill can be deemed a failure due to the magnitude of environmental damage and economic loss. Key issues such as poor risk assessment and ineffective communication strategies contributed to the crisis’s escalation. These points underscore the need for robust crisis management practices in preventing and mitigating similar incidents in the future.

5. Recommendations

For BP, the primary responsible actor in the crisis, modifications to their crisis management plan should focus on enhancing risk assessment protocols, improving communication channels with stakeholders, and investing in advanced technology for rapid spill response. Recommendations should be tailored to address specific shortcomings identified during the Deepwater Horizon incident to ensure better crisis preparedness and response capabilities.

6. Bibliography, References & Appendices

In preparing this report, a minimum of 10 scholarly sources will be utilized to support the analysis of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill crisis. Proper APA referencing will be applied throughout the report, including in-text citations and a comprehensive bibliography. Additional details, statistics, and visuals may be included in appendices to supplement the main text.

By examining the Deepwater Horizon oil spill crisis through a crisis management lens, we can extract valuable lessons for improving organizational responses to future crises. This analysis will not only highlight areas for enhancement but also emphasize the critical role of effective crisis management in minimizing the impact of disasters on society and the environment.
