The Treatment of the Vulnerable: A Comparative Analysis of Nietzsche’s Beyond Good and Evil with King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail

Name of Student Dr. Ford Philosophy 1301 (or 2306) Date (e.g. 1 October 2013) The Treatment of the Vulnerable: A Comparative Analysis of Nietzsche’s Beyond Good and Evil with King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail In the first section introduce the subject of paper, that is the way to treat the poor and vulnerable in society. You might want to give examples of the poor or weak in society, not only today but throughout history. Next state the purpose of the paper. The purpose can be found in the title of the paper itself. In the second section you need to state the major view Nietzsche is taking towards the vulnerable (down-and-out) in Beyond Good and Evil and how he supports that view. You can find the way he says we should treat the weak in section 259 in which he describes what Life essentially is. There are at least 5 major ways he supports his claim. Please answer these 5 questions to see how he supports his claim. 1. In the first line of the reading Nietzsche said that he wanted slavery because slavery was essential to having an aristocracy. Why though did he want an aristocracy which includes beating down the weak? 2. At the end of section 257 Nietzsche described people as being beasts. How would that support his claim that we should be able to beat down the vulnerable? 3. At the end of section 258 Nietzsche used the example of the Javanese climbing plant to support his claim. Is Nietzsche assuming we’re just nothing more than everything else in nature and how would this plant support his claim then? 4. In section 259 Nietzsche described the very essence of life. Is he assuming that life itself is good? If so, should we then beat down people (make sure you’re representing his view on life, not yours.) 5. In section 260 Nietzsche contrasts the morality of the nobles (the strong man) and the weaker. Is he claiming that both groups are using the other? If so, can the weaker logically claim it is OK to use the nobles but the nobles cannot use the weak? How would this be affected by the principle of non-contradiction? (You can find this principle in the list of principles of logic and logical fallacies found on the assignment page of Blackboard.) In the third section, you need to state the major view MLK is taking in Letter from Birmingham Jail on how to treat the down and out, and how he develops and supports that view. For example, how does he believe the vulnerable blacks in Alabama should be treated? Answering this question might help you see what he believes: Did he want the blacks to be treated the same way as the whites or not? Where does he say that? Expand upon it. Also, state the different ways he supports his view. Answering these three questions will help you see how he supports himself: 1. Logically speaking did MLK view that blacks should be treated the same way as blacks, for example, look at the way the blacks were being treated at that time. What was happening to his fellow black brothers? What happened to his little daughter when Funtown opened up? What happened to his little son? Once more look at the principle of non-contradiction? Were the whites contradicting themselves when they were OK with blacks being treated this way, but they were not? 2. Did MLK support his view by appealing to justice for the African American? When MLK spoke about Augustine’s, Aquinas’, Martin Buber, and Paul Tillich’s views of justice, how did he believe the blacks should experience justice in Alabama? How would this support his claim? 3. Did MLK believe in democracy? If so, how did MLK say the blacks should be treated democratically in Alabama? After describing and analyzing the two approaches, a state whose approach you prefer and explain the reason you endorse that approach. For example, show the weaknesses of the approach you reject and the strengths of the approach you prefer. Point out the strengths of the approach you support and the weaknesses of the approach you reject. Also, point out any principles of logic either MLK or Nietzsche may be using and also any logical principles they may be violating. Remember that this page is to be no shorter than 1 ½ pages in length (NOT SHORTER!). Do NOT mess with the writing template, e.g. font size and type of font. Doing so will result in a “0” for this assignment. You must use the footnote below to cite the sources for the Nietzsche and King writings.
