In this paper (6 pages), you will examine the political sources of non­rational policy outcomes. In your paper, make
sure to:
1)Identify a contradiction and paradox in existing policy on your topic
• Public opinion at odds with existing policy. E.g. (Stone, page 4).
• Non­rational voter behavior
• Existing policy does not lead to outcomes the affect the public at large
• Existing policy does not pass the litmus test of cost­benefit calculus
2) uncover the Political Reasoning behind existing policy or policy change:
• Special Interests (Corporations, Labor Unions, Professional Associations, etc.) that benefit from or are
harmed by policy change
• The political strategies and positioning of established interests
• The Revolving Door: Business­Government
3)expose the Political Rhetoric:
• Both style and content of political ideas
• Political metaphor: stereotypical images , and symbolic language used to stir passion and mobilize people for
or against a given policy reform
