preparing research proposals

Through this assignment you will start developing the skills required for preparing your own research proposal. One of the key skills in writing a proposal is to find appropriate literature, understand and assess the methods and methodologies it uses and to make decisions about potential methods for your own research study.

PART A: Finding literature (20 marks)

Identify a research topic of interest to your profession for which you will conduct a search for literature.
Develop a search strategy for this topic – provide information on the search terms you would use and the databases that you would search. Justify your decisions.
Using your search strategy, identify 3 primary research papers in this area that use different research methods and methodologies. You should ensure that there are papers in your selection that use both qualitative methods and quantitative methods. You may also include mixed method papers. Clearly identify the method and methodology for each paper, documenting the key features of the method.
Part B
Select ONE of the topic areas below and read the three associated papers.
Topic 3: Teaching English as a second or additional language using Information Communication Technology

Write an essay-style assignment that examines this literature, through synthesis of the different papers and addresses the following:

Description of the methods, methodology and paradigm of each of the selected papers, justifying your selection. In some instances this will be explicitly discussed in the paper, in others you will have to make this decision.
Critical analysis of the papers, focused specifically on methods and methodologies, explicitly using a checklist or tool for critical analysis of research studies. Make use of other research methods literature to justify and substantiate your comments, paying particular attention to the strengths and limitations of the methods.
You will have to determine which checklist or tool is appropriate for each of your papers. The following tools are available to you:
