Model Assignment
Overview
As part of your final paper for a proposed analysis and evaluation project you will be expected to
construct a logic model as outlined in chapter 2 of your text. According to the authors, a logic model
is “a way of representing a program as an open system that categorizes program activities, and outlines
the intended flow of activities from outputs to outcomes.” Your assignment is take the outline from
the text and apply the same framework to your proposed evaluation of an extant program. Your basic
proposal assignment should come first, and indeed it is due earlier for that reason.
Obviously there will be parts of the process that are more difficult given that you are proposing an
evaluation and not actually completing one. For example, you are neither required or likely able to
meet with managers and key stakeholders of the program as your book outlines. Please just learn as
much about the program as possible from afar. If you are able to meet with managers and stakeholders
that will of course be nice, but it is in no way required for your success on this assignment. Your book
and the program information you find should suffice. My only advice is that you choose a program
wisely so there is plenty of information for your proposal, logic model, and final paper.
Your logic model should be on one page and should clearly indicate the program components, implementation
objectives and the specific causal linkages among outputs, linking constructs and outcomes.
I suggest you make use of the “Shapes” or “SmartArt” functions in your favorite word or document
processor, drawing program, etc. as needed.
On the second page, describe the process you used to construct the model. What steps did you take
to translate the program description into a model? Think of this second page as an opportunity to
elucidate your own “path” as you worked through this assignment.
Be sure to indicate in your logic model how each component is linked to respective outputs, how
particular outputs are connected to particular linking constructs, and how they in turn are connected
to particular intended outcomes for the individuals who participate in the program.
Think of this assignment as creating the roadmap for your final paper. As such, your proposal and logic
model each will significantly contribute to your success on that final project, and your overall grade.
Grading
Your logic model assignment will be graded on three primary items:
1. Overall clarity
2. Causal linkages
3. Clarity of links between objectives and outcomes
