In the criminal justice system, law enforcement officers struggle with ethical and moral issues that come their way. With each new day comes a new issue that emerges into the lives of officers and it is ultimately up to them to handle it appropriately. An officer with a Christian worldview is capable of making better decisions when guided by the Holy Spirit. A worldview can be defined as the way in which an individual views and values the world. David Dewitt (2007) states “Worldviews are a lot like noses. Everyone has one. Even though one’s nose is right in front of their face, he cannot see it, but he can see everyone else’s” (p.23). Worldviews are not always based on what a person claims to believe or says.
The concept of a worldview is highly dynamic. One’s worldview can change quickly due to what he or she is exposed to on the job. For a police officer, their worldview will affect the way he or she handles ethical and moral dilemmas that can occur on the job. Hess and Wrobleski (2006) believe that in order to make a certain impression on others, people are capable of putting on another individual’s worldview, but ethics include one’s honor and veracity that are revealed in one’s actions when there is no one else around (p.469). Those who assert a Christian worldview should be consistent with what they claim and how they act.
There is a low acceptance rate of Christianity and there appears to be a struggle for Christian police officers to enter into a given police department and uphold their testimony. Having a Christian worldview does not automatically prevent ethical and moral struggles from happening, but a police officer with a Christian worldview should not be quite as prone to giving in to unethical decisions when facing dilemmas. Colossians 2:8 (NIV) states, “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.” This verse stresses the importance of staying in God’s will.
