MEO Assessment – (Research project)
Class: Year 4 – semester one
This is a major project need to be completed in groups by every MEO year 4 student. Every group will have 3 to 4 students as divided in the beginning of the semester. The students are advised to proceed further through doing a research in multiple areas from their prior knowledge to accomplish this project.
This project warrants to blend the information from more than one module (subject). The core modules to study in connection with the project, which will be considered also for evaluation are mentioned as below.
Ship Construction and Stability
Auxiliary machinery
Marine power plant
Maintenance and fault finding
Maritime law
Electro technology
Thermodynamics
Elements from all the above modules will be separately assessed by the respective module teachers and the weightage towards final score to all the modules are also mentioned in the respective areas of marking criterion.
This project must be completed within 6 week time, in case of extension the penalties will be imposed including nullifying the project and awards zero score, which will be mentioned in the marking criteria.
Self-centered learning and research will be two key areas that must be developed by you during execution of this project. In this regards your subject teachers are always available to support you. Your issued text books, training from laboratories and simulators, handouts, internet and websites, books from Library are set examples of your resources for the research.
Though you are allowed to refer any information produce YOUR OWN WORK for which any subject teacher can seek evidences including a scanning using ‘turnitin’ software. Plagiarism will be dealt with IMCO academic policies
Description of the project
One of the main expenses of the ships is the fuel cost. Owner are planning to reduce fuel consumption in different ways. By reducing of speed, reducing the engine load, modification of ship body or better engines.
Each ship normally is equipped with two or more diesel generator inside the engine room which each single generator is able to supply full sea load of the ship during her voyage. Many of ships while stay at port do not have electrical load as much as sailing. Therefore if those install with smaller diesel generator while they are at port they can save some fuel and make the ship more economic.
One of ship manger has decided to install a small generator on board of one his vessel. The ship is dry bulk carry of 40000 ton dead weight with length of 140 meter, width of 14 meter and 7 meter draught. Due to restriction in area inside the engine room, the generator should be installed on deck side. This ship is equipped with three diesel generators of 760 Kw, 440 Volts and 50 Hz frequency on 1800 rpm with power factor of 0.75. The harbor load of ship fluctuate between 120 to 150 Kw.
As research project students should select the proper generator and do needful preparation for installing and operating of the generator.
Instruction for student:
- There are parts in this research that require independent and group literature research to find the solutions. Use websites, manuals and the books available in the library to find the answers. This assignment has been designed to help with your learning about marine diesel engines, auxiliary machinery, thermodynamic, construction, stability, electrical system, maritime law and maintenance and fault finding.
- Student should select a ship as a model, similar to above said ship specification for their construction and stability calculation.
- The selected generator should be available in market and match the ship requirement.
- Research should contain adequate drawings and articles.
Objective of the Research project.
On successful completion of this project the student shall be able to:
- Design adequate auxiliary system to able the generator to run.
- Explain how this generator will be connected to the power system of the ship with drawing.
- Draw a block diagram for all of the electrical protection which should be connected to the generator
- Evaluate effect of using un-treated cooling water in operation of the diesel engine.
- Write a Maritime Law Code for this action.
- Make a Maintenance Schedule for this equipment.
