Internet Questions

Eureka is a a telephone and Internet-based concierge services that specializes in obtaining things that are hard to find (e.g. Super Bowl tickets, first  edition books from the 1500s, Faberge eggs). It currently employs 60 staff members who collectively provide 24-hour coverage (over three shifts). They answer the phones and respond to requests entered on the Eureka! Web site. Much of their work is spent on the phone e and on computers searching on the Internet. The company has just leased a new office building and is about to wire it. They have bids from different companies to install (1) 100-Base T network (2) Wi-Fi network What would you recommend? Why?

Deciding between which networks; 100Base T, or Wi-Fi would be better for the company depends on many different factors. How many devices the company has, what they’re using them for and how often are they in use are just a few questions to ask. Being as though we already know that there are 60 employees that rotate shifts during a 24hour period, in my opinion 100Base T would be the fastest and most reliable network for the company. As with any Internet connection, you’re not paying for any service that is guaranteed, but rather the potential the service has, hoping that it is also cost efficient. 100Base T supports twisted pair and fiber cabling options leaving the company with more than one choice to make to better suit their preferences or needs. Deciding to use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi means that the company would maintain CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection). This means that company can save money by integrating into its existing Ethernet. Unlike Wi-Fi, cabling is simple with Ethernet, not to mention micro segmentation can be used to improve network bandwidth.

Devices that use Wi-Fi networking can be moved anywhere within the building without needing wire connections, as long as it is kept within the Wi-Fi access point. This would mean that you would not have to move equipment very far, if any at all. Ethernet devices have to stay connected to a cable to work, meaning the cable either has to be moved with the device or the user must switch cables when moving Wi-Fi can be considerably cheaper with its network setup, unlike running the Ethernet cable to the network switch. With the ability of Wi-Fi networks being able to connect anywhere, it makes it security standard of keeping it secure more difficult than that of Ethernet. Another important factor to consider is that Wi-Fi uses radio technology which makes it susceptible to electrical interference. This could lower the signals quality along with its transfer of data, along with increasing the possibility of collision. In my opinion deciding to choose a 100Base T network would considerably be the better decision for the company, especially if they are considering the better results long term.
