What I liked a lot about our team was that we contacted each other right away when the groups were made. Everybody wanted to get together and work on the project and nobody came late or wasn’t available.
Our group of 8 included people from 5 different cultures. So there were obviously different approaches and characters. But everybody participated in his/her own way and cared about the outcome of the project. I appreciated that a lot.
I think the reason why we were able to work so well together was the awareness of the different cultures. As we’ve learned in class, have some cultures a high-context culture while others have a low-context culture. Some are used to a more hierarchical cultural setup and others to a more flat and horizontal setup. And while the western cultures value individual achievements, values the Asian culture a more collectivistic approach (Varner & Beamer, 2011).
This knowledge helped me a lot to better understand the way we all acted during face-to-face meetings and online (WIKI/E-mail).
Overall, we participated as a group and everybody interacted and shared ideas. Group members were flexible in finding time for meetings and we could always rely on each other and knew that people would do what they said they would.
The negative aspects refer more to the fact that we were such a big group. If 8 people have to communicate with each other, it can sometimes be a little chaotic. People are not constantly in front of their computers, so whenever somebody asked a question, this person usually had to wait a while until everybody was able to respond.
What I always find difficult is the fact that there is no designated team leader in these groups. While there usually is somebody that makes the final decisions in a business setting, everybody is on the same level in a school group. That can make it a little bit more difficult and time consuming to make decisions.
