Chapter 4 – Question 2
Epicurus believes that fear of divine retribution is the greatest source of fear and anxiety. Do you agree with this assessment? Why or why not?
Respond to:
I quiet agree with Epicurus that fear of divine retribution is the greatest source of fear and anxiety. Let me explain the reason why I agree with this assessment by first giving the definition of Divine Retribution. The words Divine retribution is a supernatural punishment of a person, a group of people, or everyone that has done evil. In other words, it is the idea that God will return vengeance or justice for wrong-doing. Majority of these wrongdoers actually do know that God exists, but they suppress this truth because of their unrighteousness. I so much believe that whatever
evil anyone has done, he or she must face the consequences of it, even though some Christians believe that the Grace of God will cover their sins. But I tell you that whether God forgives your sins or not, the consequences of your sins is what you can never escape. According to proverb chapter 11 verse 21, it says that “Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished, but those who are righteous will go free”. Every evildoer will definitely get back the evil they have done to others even in a more painful way and it is called the “law of retribution” and some might call it the
“law of Karma”.
Chapter 4 – Question 3
Question:
Epicurus argues that the best and happiest way of life is one in which one seeks to satisfy on the most basic, natural and necessary desires. Do you agree that embracing such a life of simplicity
(no honor, fame, luxury or wealth) is really more conducive to happiness and tranquility than trying to “keep up with the Joneses”? If you said “yes,” then are you already taking measures to live in the Epicurean manner?
Respond to:
Pleasure for Epicurus is similar to things like a satisfaction that there is no pain or shortage rather than the existence of pleasure. The inner tranquility is the one Epicurus expressed in the word Ataraxia. I would agree that embracing such a life of simplicity is really more conducive to happiness and tranquility than trying to “keep up with the Joneses.” Honor, fame, luxury, or wealth are the measurements of your life comparing to others, but fascinating and disturbing yourself, inner tranquility. People’s minds are easy to move, fragile, and weak. Keeping up with the Joneses is to dive into being disturbed by desires and those fascinations. But rather, without desires and fascination, you are not manipulated by them and able to control yourself, which is conducive to happiness and inner tranquility.
