There has been major controversy across the nation regarding immigration rights, specifically with the DACA policy. Two-thirds of Americans say people brought to the United States as children and now residing in the country illegally, should be granted legal status (Montanaro, 2018). Supporters of this policy believe that immigrants are an important part of our identity as America and the cultural diversity makes us who we are.

            Politicians are heavily divided between the two parties on immigration issues. President Trump strongly states that any deal on DACA that does not include strong border security and a wall is a waste of time (Monantaro, 2018). The Republican party strongly supports Trump’s views on immigration with 68% of them wanting a wall to be built (Montanaro, 2018). In the beginning of 2019, the government shut down briefly due to the dividing line on immigration between the Republicans and Democrats. The Democratic party strongly supports immigration rights. Montanaro (2018), states that the divide between Republicans and Democrats was not always so far apart. At the start of Obama’s presidency, their numbers were indistinguishable from each other and the 2016 Trump campaign created a massive gap on the issue (Monantaro, 2018).
