Compare/ and or Contrast Essay
Objective: As one of the modes of expository writing, the comparison and contrast essay helps students make connections between texts, ideas or issues, though critical reflection on the similarities and differences of these items. From this, students have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the texts, ideas or issues that are being compared and contrasted, so they can move beyond mere desсrіption or summary and generate a more interesting analysis. Directions: • Write an essay on one of the prompts below. • After you have pre-written, map out your ideas (recreate one of the outlines provided on BB), in a clear and well-organized way that would make sense to a reader. • When drafting the essay, your points should be well supported with details or examples that are fully developed. • Moreover, correct sentence structure and grammar are important. Keep in mind that a good essay should have: o Several paragraphs o Good organization (including an introduction, body and conclusion) o Opinions well supported with details or examples o A title Basic Requirements: • Essay MUST follow either the subject-by subject outline, or the point-by-point. • Essay MUST show evidence of pre-writing and outlining. • Essay MUST be written in the first and third person only. • Essay MUST have a title. • Essay MUST be typed. • Essay MUST follow the proper MLA formatting. • Essay MUST be stapled. Rhetorical Requirements: • Essay MUST have evidence of the appeals—logos, and ethos. • Essay MUST have objective language. • Essay MUST include the use of two (2) semi-colons, two (2) colons, and one (1) dash Important Date(s): • Essay due – Wednesday, 4/19 ______________________________________________________________________________ According to the documentary, the Lottery of Birth, we have no control over the social, economic or political situation we are born into. Although this may be true, we can control the quality of our lives, by preparing for our future, today. For a lot of us, this means either deciding (sooner, rather than later) on what college/university we want to attend, or what career we want to have to ensure a successful future. A.
