In this section we revisit the pathophysiology of chronic conditions and common comorbidities. The management of multiple chronic conditions involves complex
pharmacotherapy and care decisions. The high incidence of chronic conditions in the community and the increasing co-occurrence of two or more conditions in one person
effect the assessment, diagnosis and treatment and care planning in the prehospital setting. We explore the challenges that chronic and complex patient presentations
pose to paramedics and their decision making.
