Scenario
You are a paralegal at the Mt. Gravatt Legal Centre. On your arrival at work on Friday the 4 April 2013 at 7:30am you find a message on the office answering machine from Harry Hapless, a client well known to the Centre. You type the transcript of the message which is as follows:
“Yeah…um… this is Harry Hapless here. I was arrested at 7 o’clock this morning on suspicion of manufacturing drugs at home. They have just charged me with manufacturing drugs, I’m not sure exactly what the offence is called.
The police are holding me at the Winter St. Police Station and said they don’t think they will give me bail and that I will be taken to the Magistrates Court tomorrow for a bail hearing.
The police have said that I can get a solicitor to ask the Court to grant me bail but that they will be asking to Court not to grant bail. They have found some ecstasy tabs and seized them as evidence.
I need Warren Warrior (solicitor) to come down and sort something out. You can call the Detective on 0400000000 to let him know when someone will be here. They want to question me….I won’t do anything until Warren gets here. Please tell him to hurry……”
You need to send an email urgently to Warren Warrior advising him of the details of the call. You know he is available to go immediately to the Police Station as Winter St is near his home and he sent you a text to say he would be a little late today as he was working on an affidavit at home.

Your task is to:
1. Prepare a memorandum for Warren Warrior in email form advising him of all critical information including:
o Details of the call from Harry Hapless;
o Your research of what the relevant charge might be including the name of the Act, the relevant section and whether the offence is an indictable offence or a summary/simple offence. (Please cut and paste a copy of the relevant section into your file note).
o The current status of the matter (i.e. has Harry yet been charged with an offence, has he made any statement to the police, is he currently being held by the police in custody and if so then when is the bail hearing going to take place?).
2. Open a file for this new matter for Harry Hapless. Prepare the file cover label and inside file cover sheet, place on the file a copy of the transcript of the telephone call, a copy of the memorandum [email] to Warren Warrior and a note to file setting out the time you have spent on these tasks.
