‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures’

1) Purpose: As one of the Australian Curriculum’s cross-curriculum priorities is ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures’ this assessment item provides students with the opportunity to apply the requirements of this priority to a lesson plan. In doing so, students will also gain a deeper understanding of the AITSL standards relating to Indigenous students.

2) Process: To develop students understanding and to practice of embedding Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander perspectives in lesson plans designed for mainstream classrooms, students are required to research and critically analyse one Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander resource from any language group of their choosing. Students are to provide a 300-word analysis of the resource with supporting evidence from the relevant literature. Students will then select a year level and subject area and develop a lesson plan for a mainstream classroom. The lesson plan should be culturally appropriate and embed the researched Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander perspective. The lesson plan should clearly meet the ACARA cross-curriculum priority’s requirements and state the relevant AITSL standards.

A template will be provided.

3) Assessment Criteria:
***300 word Resource Analysis
-Culturally appropriate and meets Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander protocols
-Succinct overview of the relevant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective of the selected resource
-Succinct discussion on why the chosen perspective is relevant to the lesson
-Contemporary and positive analysis
-Explain the validity of the resource

***Lesson Plan (Using the lesson plan template provided)
-An overview of the lesson (in sufficient detail for the markers to understand the lesson)
-Originality, creativity, and depth of understanding of embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in the lesson plan
-Relevant and culturally appropriate lesson outcomes.
-Positive embedding of the Indigenous perspective
-The lesson teaches the perspective in context
-Appropriateness and relevance of the lesson to the year level and subject area
-Evidence of following Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander protocols
-Meets ACARA’s cross-curriculum priorities requirements

***Literacy criteria.
-Evidence of background reading and research – using at least six peer-reviewed journals or books
-References appropriately cited and accurately interpreted
-Coherence, including appropriate paragraph and sentence structure, spelling, grammar, punctuation and presentation
