What is the current state of democracy following the 2016 US Election?
What role has media played in influencing the future of American democracy, US governance, and US domestic and foreign policy?
Requirements:
• Write a 3-5 page essay response, based on independent research. . Define democracy, and answer the two questions presented above.
• Conduct independent research for information and journalistic perspective, and cite your sources. Potential keywords and phrases are: “American democracy” “future of US democracy”
“Election democracy 2016” “US Election 2016 media influence” “journalism Election 2016” “fake news election 2016” “Election 2016 propaganda.” These are just a few examples. You are responsible for
a minimum of six distinct sources. At least five of your sources must be from the following reputable journalism organizations: Mother Jones, Bloomberg News, Christian Science Monitor, Reuters,
The Atlantic, Democracy Now, The Wall Street Journal, The Nation, The Washington Post, The New York Times, PBS News, National Public Radio. Feel free to research and utilize additional and
different sources from this list (as long as you use five of these news sources).
• Host a dinner with members of your community to discuss 1) democracy, 2) your findings, and 3) your community’s ideas and perceptions about the future of democracy in America. Aim to stray
away from republican/democrat, right wing/left wing conversations. Work to facilitate deeper conversations about forms of government, the future of the US Constitution, the difference between
factual news and “fake news,” and the role of media outlets in shaping people’s perspectives about what is happening in their nation. Any other related topics you wish to discuss are fine. Aim to
gather 6-8 people (friends, family, fellow students, teammates, co-workers, etc.). If you are only able to gather a few people, this is understandable. Please consider providing dinner for, or
making dinner with, your community.
• Add a one page reflection on your community gathering, along with a photo of your gathering.
