you’ve got a ticket in your hand. where will you go?

There are many places in the world that I have yet to visit but if I had a free trip. I would go to Washington D.C.. I would pick Washington D.C. mainly because I have never been there and I like to travel, so going to Washington D.C. would be one more place that I can tick off, because I would have been there.

I know probably some of the most common reasons that people go to Washington D.C. is either to go and visit the vast number of museums that hold all of America’s history or they will go to take a tour of the White House.

Now why on Earth would a teenager, give up a free ticket to go anywhere in the world? Well it is simple really. On the outside America looks like we have everything sorted and we know what we are doing, but what people don’t realise is that America as country is not as advanced as you would think it is. Yes, we have all the latest technology and our economy is doing alright for the moment, but we still as a whole have an old-fashioned mindset. So why do I want to go to Washington D.C., well I would go so that I could address Congress and give them an insight to the problems that have yet to be fixed.

Typically, a private citizen cannot address Congress unless invited by Congress or one of the Congressional committees to do so. So, to get an invite I would work with Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, by working with her I will hopefully convince her that I have something to say that is relevant, or on a topic that they have an interest in and, if not then I would have to communicate in writing.

If I have the privilege of addressing Congress, then this is what I will say:

It is now fashionable to talk about equal rights, yet a lot of women don’t have the same rights as men, duly noted that we have many rights but we are still seen as inferior to men, which I believe defeated the whole point of “equal rights”. Women in America are still being paid less than men even if we are doing the exact same job and working the same hours. We (America) is supposed to be the most progressive society in the world, so for this to still be happening is a contradiction of Article 14 of the U.S Constitution the same constitution that George Washington presided over himself.

Secondly, healthcare. As much money as the government has and spends, and as much as we as a people pay in taxes, we have no free healthcare or low cost healthcare. Most plans available, are out of reach of the average person. Countries that aren’t as wealthy as America, are able to provide free basic healthcare to their citizens. I’m not saying that this healthcare should be extraordinary, Government should be able to provide free, basic healthcare to its citizens. Borrowing a page from America’s closest ally Great Britain, basic healthcare is free in the United Kingdom but some people do have to make contributions towards their care depending on their circumstances; ie. if they are working, and are between the ages of 18 and 64, they pay the equivalent of about fifteen dollars (depending on the exchange rate) towards prescriptions. Exceptions are made for people with disabilities etc. so it is possible to build on that and have people make contributions based on their circumstances and needs.

Lastly Student loan debt. This has become one of the worst financial ordeals for many, and at the same time, the education we as students receive is lacking when compared to the rest of the world. Unfortunately, this is true for every level in the educational system in the America from preschool to college, especially college, rarely do we get value for our money. Some States are struggling to do things as simple as keeping schools open because they are trying to figure out priorities. From preschool to higher education, we all deserve better and we are all looking to the Government for answers but as time goes on we don’t seem to see anyone trying to help reduce the costs of higher education. I have spoken to a lot of my peers about this, and some of them who have dreams of a higher education, like going on to University to get a four year degree, have decided not to but instead to go to a vocational school simply because they were afraid of the astronomical costs associated with going to a four year college. As this should be a natural progression, from High School to College or University, especially since most kids are told that it is the norm, I understand that there will be some cost but we shouldn’t be burdened with astronomical loans simply because we choose to pursuit the course of higher education.
