Grading system: A = (90-100 points) An “A” paper provides a clear original thesis that has evolved from the writer’s conversation with other experts in the field, along with his/her own experience/knowledge. The thesis is followed throughout the paper with original ideas and textual interaction in the form of a dialogue. The paper is well organized, with each topic sentence flowing from the thesis to creating meaningful paragraphs. Terms are well defined and lead the reader through the paper. Quotations are introduced, take the paper in different directions, are integrated into the body of a sentence, and are interpreted by the writer. Overall, the paper exhibits a clear, simple yet elegant style, demonstrating a point with direction and logic through the use of different types of sentence structures and rich vocabulary. To receive full credit you must revise the first draft of essay 1. To give you some suggestions of how to proceed, below are some ideas for revision: Examine the two sets of peer review comments you received If the reviewers made the same suggestions, seriously consider those If they made different suggestions, ask each of them for more explanation about that point, then go with whichever comment makes more sense to you and feels like it will make the biggest improvements (which may not be suggestion that requires less work) Have another person read your paper. Reach out to another classmate and see if you can help each other. Ask a roommate, a friend. Go to the Learning Center! Yes, they are helpful! Just be sure to bring your assignment sheet and readings so that they know the paper guidelines Ask me any questions that you might have On a separate sheet of paper, write all the arguments that someone who wouldn’t agree with your opinion would make, then be sure that in some way you’ve refuted and/or addressed those points in your paper (part of good writing is anticipating what naysayers might think and addressing that point before the reader can really even think of it) Turn your paper into an outline and see if it makes sense once it’s condensed. Is the thesis clear and specific, avoiding words like “things” and “ways” and instead clearly detailing what it is arguing and providing a “road map” for the reader? Do the topic sentences relate directly to the thesis? Is each textual reference in the body graph related to the topic in the topic sentence? Does it support the argument made there and in the thesis? Is it cited correctly? Do the body graphs move in a logical order? Like from general to specific or vice a versa? Does it make sense why they are placed in the order in they are in? If not, make it so. To create a second draft, don’t worry much about grammar and smaller points like that. I want you to focus on “global” issues like structure and the logic of your argument. Make sure that you are moving graphs around, you are altering your stance, choosing the best evidence, quoting when you should and paraphrasing or summarizing when that’s more useful. Think of solidifying the “big picture” in this draft. The smaller stuff will come in the next round. Watch this video from a Yale professor (only watch from 13:20-14:50, a short minute and a half, where he makes some good points about why we paraphrase that are useful for our purposes (the rest of the video is about literary theory and not as useful).
