Task:

Maria DiBattista states, “Dames…tend to ignore, when they do not openly mock, traditional notions of respectable femininity” (9).

The character Amanda played by Katherine Hepburn in Adam’s Rib is considered the quintessential Fast Talking Dame found in 1940s Romantic Comedies. How does DiBattista’s quote apply to and how is it represented in the film Adam’s Rib? You may use the character of Doris Attinger as a point of comparison.

Include the following in your typed essay:

1) An explanation of what this quote means in context of the film.

2) An explanation of the specific Dame characteristics Amanda exhibits which supports the quote; and

3) Specific scene examples from the film that illustrate how Amanda ignores or openly mocks traditional notions of respectable femininity (according to that time period).

86 = Memorization: shows the ability to correctly REPEAT material as presented in lecture, discussion, etc. Specific examples from the clip are specific and relevant. Explanations are NOT given that show how the specific examples support the analysis.

76 = Awareness: shows some familiarity with course material but can’t accurately or completely repeat material from class. Specific examples from the clip are not fully described and explanations given to show how each example supports the analysis are UNCLEAR.

66 = Effort: attempted work but doesn’t demonstrate basic awareness of course material

50 = Lack of Effort: doesn’t follow directions (part of the task is not addressed, specific examples are not described, film concept is not addressed, etc.).

0 = Most of the question is not addressed, off topic, or does not make a substantial attempt
