1. Based on Mead’s symbolic interactionist understanding of the development of the self in society, and Goffman’s dramaturgical approach to how we present ourselves to
each other in everyday life, what do these approaches tell us about the relationship between social order and moral conduct?

2. Describe the key features of Total Institutions, according to Goffman. How much of his analysis still holds up in relation to contemporary social institutions? What
do you think distinguishes Goffman’s Total Institutions from Foucault’s disciplinary systems?

3. What can we learn about the development of the self and identity from the Ethnomethdological approach of Garfinkel and his followers? Explain what Garfinkel means
by ‘passing’ in relation to the chapter on Agnes? How is ‘gender’ the result of the ‘doing’ of social interaction according to ethnomethodology?

4. Explain in detail Foucault’s concept of ‘disciplines’. How does Foucault’s approach in Discipline and Punish offer an alternative theoretical approach to
understanding how power relations work in society?
