Please review/read the following case studies….

“Corrections Corporation of America”

“San Fransico’s Juvenile Justice System: Trying to do right by kids who do wrong”

“Taking Charge: Rose Washington and Spofford Juvenile Detention Center”

“Massachusetts Department of Corrections”

which examine individuals in leadership roles within the corrections field. Each article describes unique circumstances; from Rose Washington at Spofford to
Commissioner Boone with the Massachusetts Department of Correction to Mimi Silbert with San Francisco’s Juvenile Justice System. Each of these individuals faced
challenges which mandated leadership qualities and characteristics.

In addition to the case studies, read/review Colin Powell’s book, It Worked for Me: In Life and Leadership. Powell’s writings are made to be simple, direct and
insightful.

Use the information that you learned from Powell and apply it to the case studies you have read. Discuss how the main players either utilized, failed to utilize or
could have utilized the leadership principals and qualities discussed in the book.

For example, how did Rose Washington handle the first crisis, staffing issues and re-organization of the management?

Moreover, what would Powell have done and most importantly, what would you have done? Powell talks about things such as,

“If you take the king’s coin, you give the king his due.”

“No matter what your job, you are there to serve…go in with a commitment to selfless service, never selfish service.”

“Don’t stand there, do something!”

Use direct quotes from the book and give multiple examples of where you are able to identify various leadership qualities (or lack thereof).
