Order Description

The module assessment consists of a 2000 word case study. This case study will explore the holistic care given to an individual with a recognised long term condition.
Within the assignment you should explore the impact of the long term condition on the individual, family and society and using a critical approach examine the role of
the nurse and nursing in the management of the long term condition. As part of the critical examination of the role of the nurse in the management of a long term
condition, you should explore both the current approach used to manage the condition and other potential approaches.
The assignment is 2000 words +/- 10% and the following is a suggested approach to structuring your assignment. Throughout your assignment in line with the NMC (2015)
Code, you should ensure that you maintain patient confidential
The long term condition is rheumatoid arthritis.

1. Section 1. You will need to introduce your patient and briefly introduce their family circumstances, e.g. My patient is a married man of 50, who has 2 grown up
children. This section should be approximately 200 words.
2. Section 2. You need to justify you choice of the long term condition. This justification should be based on the epidemiology of your chosen condition. For example,
condition x, according to Bloggs (2012) affects approximately 24.5/100,000 of the population. this makes it the most common genetic in the U.K. This section should
include the epidemiology for both national and local data. This section should be approximately 200 words.
3. Section 3, is the section where you should explore the impact of the long term condition on the individual and the family/ significant others. Within this section
you should support you observations about the impact with relevant supporting literature. For example, Bob was extremely reluctant to talk about the effects of his
condition and appeared to be in denial. The seminal work on grief by Kubler-Ross (1969) explores how denial and depression are both stages of the grieving cycle. While
the Kubler-Ross (1969) bereavement model is widely used, Bloggs (2015) argues that this model presents grief as a linear process, which fails to reflect the lived
experience of those people facing ongoing issues of grief and bereavement. This section should be approximately 600 words.
4. Section 4 is a critical examination of the role of the nurse in the management of a long term condition. This section should include a reference to both policies
related to long term conditions such as NICE guidelines. You work should include a critical examination of the literature related to nursing and individual with a long
term condition. For example Smith (2014) advocates the nursing as a profession the empowers the patient, but Bloggs et al (2014) suggest that patients do not want to
be empowered. This section should be approximately 600 words long.
5. Section 5. In this section you will explore what approach is being used to manage the patient’s condition and explore whether other approaches are available. These
approaches should be supported by relevant evidence. For example Bob was receiving treatment with anti-anxiety medication for his OCD. Smith and Jones (2011) found
that talking therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) are as effective as drug regimes. This section should be approximately 400 words long.
It is important that you use the most up to date evidence. If you are using older evidence e.g. 5 to 10 years you need to explain why this is the most up to date
evidence. If your sources are more than 10 years old, then these should be seminal works for example Kubler-Ross (1969) and should be identified as such.
