potential criminals. In this announcement the Prime Minister states, ” Any person who has served a term of imprisonment of more than two years will be subject to
intensive supervision after their release from prison. They will be required to wear an electronic monitoring device 24 hours a day for two years after the completion
of their sentence. They will be required to register their place of residence with the police and may be required to report to the police who will have the power to
strip search them whenever and wherever they like. This will enable the police to closely monitor the activities of these dangerous individuals for the safety of
society and discourage them from committing crime.” Blake, a former Commerce student has just been released from prison having served a three year sentence for
supplying methamphetamine (also known as meth, speed or P). He has been offered a job in the remote town of Tohunga by a former classmate. Tohunga does not have a
police station and the closest one is an hour’s drive away. Blake is concerned that the proposal will enable the police to constantly monitor his movements and thus he
feels restricted in his ability to travel where ever and whenever he likes. “If I visit my girlfriend, what business is it of the police?” he says. ”I’ve done my time,
paid my debt to society. Why should I be punished further? And the police searching me whenever they feel like it? Reporting to the police? That was not part of my
