How will I write a position paper?
We will begin the writing process together by jump-starting our research. Together, we will visit the library and learn about research, a skill you will put into practice by bringing a source to class for vetting and review. You will gather sources independently, and we will discuss topical readings on the subject, during which time you will begin forming your opinions and gathering notes.
After you have gathered some information and notes, you will want to begin thinking about the conversation as a whole and asking yourself how you feel on the subject. Are you strongly for or against “free college?” Do you support lowering costs but not making it free? Who is responsible for the cost of college? Should some colleges be free but not others?
From here, you will begin drafting! Remember, your opinion may change over time, so we want to keep a “working thesis statement” and be open to adjustment.
Your audience for this essay consists of a wide range of people with very different backgrounds- a wider, general group who are willing to be convinced either to charge for college or to make it free. By the end of your essay, the audience should be convinced of your position.
What do I need to do to be successful?
In order to write a successful position paper, there are a few things I require from you:
-Demonstrate an understanding of source inclusion and fair representation of ideas (providing counter-arguments, not taking information out of context, citing sources correctly, etc).
-Have a thesis statement which takes a side in the debate about offering free college, not one that waffles, undecided, on the question. It should also meet our three thesis requirements (original, argumentative, significant).
-Show an awareness of the appropriate audience, especially through a useful organizational structure.
-Write 1000 words on your topic.
-Include at least three sources- two must be sources you found on your own.
-Correctly format and submit an essay that adheres to MLA guidelines, including a works cited page.
-Attend and participate in writing workshops.

The position paper is your foundation for argument. You’ve already been voicing your opinion in this class, but this is your chance to offer a more original take on something that directly affects you and your fellow Tennesseans. From here, we will continue to create and build complex ideas.
