The intent of this multi-part assignment is to introduce the sport management student to the sport industry as well as the various assortment of career opportunities that exist in the realm of sport. Additionally, the student will learn the qualifications for specific sport-related positions and begin the planning & reasoning process required to successfully pursue a career in the sport industry.

In order to receive Full credit you must successfully complete/submit the following:
- Type all work: double spaced and in 12 font, with standard margins
- Adhere to all the requirements specified in each section
- Complete ALL Sections as described
- Submit into Blackboard prior to the listed deadline
The job search process can be broken into 5 Stages:
- Assessment Stage
- Preparation Stage
- Connection Stage
- Interviewing Stage

The S.C.I. focuses on Stage 1.—Assessment Stage (above) and is divided into 3 sections.
- Section 1: Personal Inventory (Personal Assessment)
- Section 2: Sport Industry & Internship Research (Industry Assessment)
- Section 3: Career Goals Action Plan & S.C.I. Summary
Section 1. Personal Inventory (Personal Assessment) 1pg minimum
Before you investigate the very broad sport industry and decide what kind of job you “think” you would like to acquire after college, you should first investigate yourself. Knowing and understanding yourself can help determine the best “fitting” job for you. Here is what you need to do: (List 1. thru 6. On your Sec. 1 Summary and respond to the following)
- Describe yourself in one sentence.
- Make a list of people (3 – 5) you personally know and admire, then below each person’s name, list their skills/qualities/characteristics that you have observed/experienced from knowing them.
- List 3-5 personal accomplishments you have achieved.
- Below each, label the skills you used in each accomplishment.
- Circle the skills that are listed most frequently; Notice any patterns?
- Rank the skills in a priority order that appeal most to you.
- Compare your skills in #3a with those of the people you listed in #2. Notice any similarities? Differences?
- Next, use the information in #1 – #4 to conduct a personal S.W.O.T. analysis on yourself. List your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats in relation to your preparedness for employment in the Sport Industry.
- Write a personal Mission Statement. It should explain/describe your purpose in life.
Type the findings from this entire section (#1 – #6), and title it “Section 1. Personal Inventory”. Then, type a brief 1/2 page reflective summary. (Double-spaced, 12 font, standard margins)
Section 2: Sport Industry & Internship Research (Industry Assessment)
Section 2—Part One: (2 page minimum)
*There are three primary employment segments in the Sport Industry:
- Performance: Amateur Sports Organizations, Athletics Administration – College and High School, Special Events Director, Sports Facilities Managing/Directing,
- Production: Sporting Goods/Equipment Sales, Sporting Goods Retail Store Mgr., Sporting Goods Wholesaler Mgr. or Accounts Exec.; Sport product R&D
- Promotion: Sports Marketing and Sponsorship, Sports Journalism and Broadcasting, Sports Public/Community Relations; Athlete Representation (Sports Agent), Professional/Semi-Pro. Sports Sales/Marketing
- Research the following sport-related websites
- Go to www.sportscareersinstitute.com
- Go to www.teamworkonline.com
- Go to www.jobtarget.com/home/index.cfm?site_id=723 click on: ‘view jobs’
- Research jobs and internships that are related to all three Sport Industry Segments (Performance, Production, and Promotion) listed above. After researching, rank 1 thru 3 which Sport Industry Segment you most prefer based on your own personal skills and interest.
- Type a 2 page minimum report that describes your findings from each of the three Sport Industry Segments and explains why you have chosen a particular industry over the others. Include in your report a list of at least 4 job and/or internship positions that you prefer and explain why you are interested in these positions. (be specific) Include your ranking of the 3 sport industry segments, (Performance, Production, and Promotion) based upon your research and include your rationale for the ranking.
Section 2—Part Two: (1 page minimum)
Now you will further investigate the Sport Industry Segment that you ranked #1 by researching related job opportunities within your sport industry of preference.

- Type a 1 page summary that explains if you are still in agreement with your Sport Industry Segment of choice, or if your preference has changed. Explain why it has or has not changed. Do you feel more or less confident about your career aspirations?
Section 3: Final Written Report and Presentation
Sec. 3, Part One: Career Goals Action Plan & Timeline (1/2 to 1 page)
Using the information you have gathered in Sections 1 & 2, formulate a career goals action plan. It should be a detailed outline that lists and describes how you plan to achieve your career goals.
The career goals action plan must include:
- Your preferred sport industry, job type, and position/title with projected salary amounts.
- Your method of obtaining experience to reach your preferred job.
- List Internships that you will attempt to complete in order to reach your goals.
- A RESUME that you would submit for your internship.
Also, provide a timeline for achieving your career goals. The timeline should start NOW, and include mile-stones until your second year after graduation. In addition, describe briefly what you hope to have achieved by your third year after graduation.
Sec. 3, Part Two: Project Written Summary (1 to 2 pages)
Provide a 1-2 page summary of the entire project. Comment on what you learned about the sport industry, yourself, and your career goals/aspirations. Did anything ‘surprise’ you? Explain/reflect on how you plan to use your skills and abilities to the best of your ability. How much experience in your chosen career field do you anticipate to gain while you’re in college/shortly after graduation? What personal qualities/skills will you need to develop to obtain your goals?
Sec. 3, Presentation This is a group presentation that will be conducted on specified day/time in-class. More detail will be provided in class, however, in order to receive credit for this portion of the SCI project, your written report must be completed and submitted into Blackboard prior to the deadline.
