A community of practice is an organizational model utilized to capture, share and disseminate knowledge and information.
A community of practice is the latest organizational model used to capture, share and disseminate knowledge.
Communities of practice comprise of informal groups of individuals with similar expertise and a commitment to address specific problems and challenges in an organization.
Communities of practice have the potential to make important contributions to an organization, including the following:
● They can add value to organizations, influence their strategic objectives and direction, and generate new business activities.
● They can solve problems and address major challenges in organizations
They have the potential to facilitate best practices and assist organizations in developing their intellectual capital.
Cross-functional Teams as the Building Blocks of Organizations:
Organizations are increasingly using cross-functional teams as a new organizational model. Team-based structures in organizations reflect the increasing use of teams for important organizational functions.
Despite their widespread use, functional teams are significantly different from communities of practices and they do have some major limitations.
For example, teams can become isolated from each other while focusing on team goals rather than the overall organizational objections. Isolated teams are reluctant to share information, which makes it difficult for other teams to obtain relevant information and keep abreast with knowledge management and other critical activities in the organization.
Combining and Linking Communities of Practice to Cross-functional Teams:
Communities of Practice differ from cross-functional teams in terms of their organizations, structures and functions.
While cross-functional teams invariably focus on production outputs and market trends, communities of practice focus on problems and challenges affecting the entire organization.
Equally important, they focus on the sharing of knowledge within an organization – the development of learning organizations and the forms of collaboration to address problems and challenges.
Communities of practice develop the core capabilities to sustain the competitive advantage of the organization.
