How would Rosicky’s life be different with today’s medical technology? Well, first things first, Rosicky would have had regular doctor visits as he was growing up to check on his heart, lungs, and his other internal organs and verified that Rosicky stayed healthy and nothing popped up out of nowhere. He would have had insurance to be able to pay for the routine check ups instead of having to worry about giving the town doctor, that he was raised with, money for when him or his family were desperately sick. Without the medical technology, Rosicky waited until he was very short of breath to go see the doctor to get put on breathing medicine thinking it was him having asthma. Instead, he finds out last minute that he only has about five to six years left of his life and he could die much sooner if he continued to work out in the fields doing what he loved. If Rosicky’s doctor had modern day technology, he could have referred Rosicky to a cardiologist (which did not exist back in the early 1900s). Even if he lived in the middle of nowhere and only had a local doctor, he could have taken a car to the next big city and seen a more experienced physician. Now, back to the cardiologist idea, the only actual medical technology that the physicians had in the early 1900s was a stethoscope, electrocardiogram (EKG), and the x-ray. The scientists had just begun developing insulin and penicillin. They did not even have blood tests, ultrasounds, or even a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines. Most of those were not created or even thought of until the mid- to end of the 1900s. With those tests, they could have come to the conclusion of exactly what was wrong with Rosicky’s heart and gave a more concluded answer other than “think [Rosicky’s heart] good for five or six years yet, maybe more, if you’ll take the strain off it.” (Cather, 2017, p. 694) With today’s modern medicine, Rosicky’s death could have been prevented, or at least pushed back another few years than it had occurred. When Rosicky had his heart attack, Polly could have had a cell phone and used it to call 9-1-1 to get an ambulance out to the farm that they were at during his heart attack to be able to get him to the closest hospital and been able to put in stents or even performed open heart surgery to fix whichever part of the heart that was giving away.
