Cross cultural communication
Cross cultural communication is communication amongdiffering cultures. This was initially found by business and governments looking to create an effective way of communicating and doing business all over the world, it enables country business to become multinational and offer services to multiple countries which include different cultures.
Miscommunication is also a large deterrent for productivity and might direct towards conflicts or increase the risk of already present conflict. This miscommunication is caused by different factors which are considered as barriers.
Language barriers
Language barriers are most common barriers for different cultures as the language in integrated deep within any culture and mostly cultures are defined in raw form of their respective languages. As the cultures and geographic area changes languages native to the place also changes. Although, a common language or international language notedly English came into work and most of the business organizations and most of management level members communicate in English but still the lower levels are learning and face difficulty while understanding the language thereby using interpreters.
A most easy way to resolve this language barrier problem is through training them in different communication courses professionally and helping them in overcoming the problem.
Cultural barrier
With the change in the geographical region the culture also changes likethe cultural values, business ethics, business process, gestures, way of thinking, behavior, facial expressions and outlook. These are few of major factors that make the communication of information difficult. For example, people from United states, China, Japan, Russia all differ from many of these cultural barriers like people in United states don’t understand a Chinese expression and vice versa. To overcome this problem people should respect other people’s traditions and culture and learn about basic cultural values with one another which is important for healthy and productive business.
Stereotypes:
The assumptions made by people towards other people cultures like their way of responding, talking and behaving in satirical manner or downgrading the culture could result in negative or even hostile environment which affects very badly on the business and or political practices.
Being humble and dealing with cool can be a good way to overcome these kinds of problem and trying to understand people and their cultural traditions is also a good way of resolving these problems.
Prejudice:
The opinion assumed before experience is termed as prejudice and a barrier for cross cultural communication this barrier can be resolved based on the person dealing with the situation by experiences and not with pre-conceived opinions.
Cross cultural communication can be used for good management practices like a team formed of people from diverse cultural backgrounds and getting benefitted from everyone with improvement of the globalization and business processes the need for teams with diverse cultured people became a requirement for achieving good results all over the organization and for the team to be diversified an effective cross cultural communication is required.in the team.
The two theories of cross cultural communication are
Impact on cultural density on team:
cultural diversity has both negative and positive effects are in existence and positive effects are the diversity driven productivity although it is not easy to manage a culturally diverse team and the theory mainly explains the advantage and disadvantages faced from the culturally diverse teams. While the disadvantages include lack of trust, mis communication, dislike between the team mates, stereotypes and cooperation issues and some benefits may include the generation of ideas because the culturally divergent people have different ideas. The problem-solving skills are also high to culturally divergent people.
Cultural synergy theory:
This theory is based on different cultures and cross-cultural communication and it helps in understanding the process of achieving the synergy and steps involved in process consists of description of situation, creativity in culture, interpretation skills and simply defines the effort to combine the people from different cultures in an organization or team that has combined skills and knowledge and these differences improve the productivity and efficiency of that team. There are many organizations which have the culturally different and synergetic employees like Microsoft, Apple.inc, Shell, Cadbury. The organizations are also aware that to be a successful global corporation competence in cross-cultural communication and follow cultural synergy concept and efficiency of the global company highly depends on the cross-cultural competence.
Hofstede’s theory:
Dr. Geert Hofstede publishes cultural dimensions model at end of 1970’s and it has been a standard in the study of cultural differences and he studied the cultural dimensions on employees of IBM who worked in 50 different countries and the dimensions are
1. Power Distance Index (high versus low).
2. Individualism Versus Collectivism.
3. Masculinity Versus Femininity.
4. Uncertainty Avoidance Index (high versus low).
5. Pragmatic Versus Normative.
6. Indulgence Versus Restraint.
Hofstede scored the countries on a scale from 0 to 100 and the scores were unravelling, today I discuss about
power distance index
In this dimension, how the people respond to hierarchy and handle the power distribution in management. In the different countries there is different perspective of looking at the power and so does the understanding of power like some nations respect the qualifications, authority, status where as other countries respect the values of the person more than power. According to our author power distance is people with less power in organizations and system accept and unequal distribution of power. The above power definition is mostly seen in organizations where the power hegemony is recognized. The power distance measure on a scale represents power index is directly proportional to employee dependency on the management.
So, if the power index is low then so does the employee dependency similarly if the power index is large then employees expect to be guided by the management. In this category Singapore, China has top power index regarding few countries according to Hofstede, the hegemony is intrinsic in the Chinese culture dating back thousands of years also called Confucianism where elder or older and management are respected by subordinating people. Whereas western countries have less amount of power index because of their value of equality of their life with others. The characteristics of a low power index countries are flatter or less powered management with management and workers are considered equally with very less difference whereas the high-power index countries are more centralized organizations with complex hierarchies and power distribution among superiors and there is very large gap in the compensation, authority also respect. Countries with low power index tend to give equal importance and encourage subordinates to take initiation and participation and cooperation are main part of the organizations.
