Indigenous people have lower health outcomes. One of the determinants of health is access to health care services. Racism is a barrier to accessing health care. I want you to think throughout this work about the one big question you’ll answer at the end:

  • Can Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility training reduce anti-Indigenous racism in the Health Care system? If yes, what is the best way to ensure this outcome?
*A special note for Indigenous students. I want to acknowledge that I’m white and my reflexive practice as an educator and sociologist is to notice that my default setting is to design learning modules, like this one, for non-Indigenous students. I’m working on how to shift away from this setting and thinking about how you, as an Indigenous person, might experience this module. Right now, without any need to self-identify as Indigenous, I invite you to do the pieces that are new to you and skip the pieces that are triggering, if any. I want you to learn without being re-traumatized. I expect the same number of pages but give you flexibility in how you learn from this material. For example, you could write something related that inspires you, for example, the strategies for change involved or about Indigenous leaders inspire you. Please also use the self-care and supportive services at Cplul’kw’ten as needed.*

  • Read as much of this 236-page report as possible (see especially the infographic on page 37 and recommendations)
  • Summarize in two pages one section of Part 3: Experiences of Indigenous Peoples in B.C. Health Care. Choose one of:
    • Part 3.3, page 72 to 80: “Indigenous women and girls are disproportionately impacted by Indigenous-specific racism in the health care system”
    • Part 3.4, pages 80 to 90: “Current public health emergencies magnify racism and vulnerabilities and disproportionately impact Indigenous peoples”
Part 3: Doing anti-racism and one big question

Total length: 1/2 page (1 to 1.5 spacing)

1) Do not share this with anyone. I want you to do your own anti-racism work; I will do it too. As recommended by Turpel-Lafonde in the interview, above, think about any passing thoughts you’ve had in the last month that may be informed by a stereotype. Write this down on a piece of paper. Carry it around for 3 days. Take it out and reflect on it regularly and find a way to stop this thought process and mental association. Ideally this – or something else – will become a ‘go-to’ practice for your own ongoing anti-racism work.

2) Finally, read recommendation two in the “In Plain Sight” report (pp. 186-187) and write half a page responding to the following question (graded based on comprehension of the recommendation and thoughtfulness):

  • Can Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility training reduce anti-Indigenous racism in the Health Care system? If yes, what is the best way to ensure this outcome?
