- Writing a letter to the editor is an excellent advocacy tool; making a point to a large audience of citizens, and specifically decision makers.
- The letter should be to your local paper/blog about an issue of local, state or national interest:
- What is the issue?
- Why this issue is important?
- Why this issue is important NOW?
- State your position on the issue.
- State the evidence or reasons why your position is correct (anticipate what the opposition would say)
- The letter should include a person’s qualifications to comment on a specific issue (e., past experience, scholarship, professional role, or just a concerned citizen). This can often be part of the signature.
- The letter should not be longer than 750 words.
- The letter should have no grammatically or spelling errors.
