A significant current event related to the United States/Mexico border involves the continued deployment of the U.S. military to the southern border and the debate surrounding its role.  

As of late April 2025, reports indicate that the U.S. military presence at the border has increased significantly following President Trump’s orders to “repel the invasion” and “seal” the border. This includes the deployment of thousands of troops, including Army personnel with Stryker armored infantry fighting vehicles, and the use of surveillance drones.  

This action has sparked considerable debate. Supporters, including some Arizona border officials, argue that it is necessary to secure the border and protect citizens from the impact of illegal immigration, citing stretched local resources.

However, migrant advocates and some border community representatives express concerns that the increased militarization will not deter migration but rather funnel migrants to more dangerous crossing points, potentially increasing deaths in the harsh desert terrain. There are also concerns that it could deter migrants from seeking help when in distress.
