Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). It was created in 2003 by the merger of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and the U.S. Customs Service.
ICE has three main components:
- Homeland Security Investigations (HSI): HSI is responsible for investigating a wide range of criminal activity, including human trafficking, drug smuggling, and financial crimes.
- Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO): ERO is responsible for removing undocumented immigrants from the United States.
- Office of the Principal Legal Advisor (OPLA): OPLA provides legal advice and support to ICE.
