Sample Answer
Professional accountability in nursing is the nurse’s obligation to provide safe, competent, and ethical care to their patients. Nurses are accountable for their own actions, as well as the actions of the other members of the healthcare team.
There are many ways that nurses demonstrate professional accountability in clinical expertise, the nursing process, and evidence-based practice. Here are a few examples:
- Clinical expertise:Â Nurses demonstrate clinical expertise by staying up-to-date on the latest medical knowledge and research, and by practicing within their scope of practice. They also demonstrate clinical expertise by being able to assess patients’ needs accurately, and by developing and implementing individualized care plans.
- The nursing process:Â The nursing process is a systematic approach to providing care to patients. It involves assessing the patient’s needs, developing a plan of care, implementing the plan, and evaluating the patient’s response. Nurses demonstrate professional accountability in the nursing process by following the steps of the process carefully, and by documenting their actions and the patient’s response.
