SOCI 1301: PSLO – HUMPHREYS’ RESEARCH, ETHICAL or NOT?

Read each question carefully and answer/address each component. Your answers must be succinct (but detailed) in nature. Answer every component in the questions. 1) Discuss the ethical guidelines of the ASA (American Sociological Association) and then discuss Laud Humphreys’ Tearoom Trade research. State whether you believe his research was ethical or not.

2) Humphreys’ study has long been cited as an excellent example of either an ethical or unethical example of sociological research. In keeping with the ASA’s ethical guidelines, cite one guideline and argue your opinion as per question one, whether or not Humphreys’ study was in keeping with the guideline.

3) In keeping with the ASA’s ethical guidelines, cite another guideline and argue whether or not Humphreys’ study was in keeping with that guideline.

4) Why was Humphreys’ research important? Regardless of whether you find his methodology ethical or not, what would you do, in the same situation, to revise the methodology and make the it more “ethical”?
