Introduction

The issue of whether guns should be banned in compasses points to the tension between gun control culture and robust gun culture. In the light of heartbreaking mass shootings in compasses in Illinois, Virginia, Alabama, Arizona and elsewhere, legislators in more than 15 states have sought to relax restrictions on concealed weapons in institutions of higher learning. Gun rights defenders claim that relaxing gun restrictions would improve both collective and individual security and deter violence. Advocates of gun control argue that permitting concealed guns on campus may pose additional risks for faculty and students; will not prevent future shootings and will result in confusion during urgent situation (Bartula, & Bowen, 2015).

This paper argues that guns should not be allowed on campuses as they are devices for violence and mayhem.

Banning Guns on Campus   

Concealed weapons on campuses are a threat to academic freedom. College and university campuses are haven sanctuaries for uninterrupted learning and the presence of weapons serve to endanger them (Winkler, 2011). Concealed weapons would interfere with a health learning atmosphere and open debates on critical matters may stir up emotions and inhibit discussions for fear of reprisal. In fact, allowing learners to carry guns will likely lead to paranoia and fear among fellow learners because no one knows whether the other party can pull or retrieve a firearm when a conflict arises. Paranoia and fear are hostile to nurturing a kind of academic climate in which free learning and academic debate flourish.

Allowing concealed firearms on campuses also compromises academic autonomy. It is the responsibility of each learning institution to determine policies that best foster both campus security and learning. Permitting faculty and students to carry firearms, against the wishes of the………………….
